Case Study: Shaw Ridge Play Park, Swindon
Shaw Ridge Park in West Swindon has been transformed into a vibrant, inclusive play destination, providing local families with a modern space where children can climb, explore, imagine and play in a safe and stimulating environment.
Commissioned by West Swindon Parish Council, the redevelopment replaces an ageing playground with a contemporary facility designed to inspire active outdoor play for children of all ages and abilities. The new play area creates an engaging community asset that encourages physical activity, social interaction and imaginative play while providing a welcoming space for families to enjoy throughout the year.
The scheme was designed by HAGS and installed by Groundwork & Leisure Services, with Notts Sport supplying its NottsSward artificial grass safety surfacing. Together, the project team has delivered an attractive, durable and accessible play environment that blends seamlessly into its natural surroundings.
The playground features an exciting range of equipment designed to challenge and engage children, including climbing towers, slides, rope play, swings, balancing features and a zip wire. Inclusive play equipment ensures children of different ages and abilities can enjoy the space, creating opportunities for everyone to develop confidence, coordination and social skills through play.
Throughout the play area, Notts Sport’s NottsSward safety surfacing provides a high-quality finish that combines excellent impact protection with the natural appearance of grass. Specifically developed for busy public play environments, NottsSward offers outstanding durability, helping the playground withstand intensive daily use while maintaining its appearance and performance. Its low-maintenance characteristics and year-round usability ensure the facility remains welcoming and accessible for the community in every season.
Alongside the new play facilities, the wider redevelopment has been carefully planned to enhance the surrounding landscape. Existing wildflower meadows have been retained wherever possible, with additional planting introduced to increase biodiversity and create an attractive setting that balances recreation with environmental responsibility. The result is a play space that not only encourages children to connect with nature but also contributes positively to the long-term sustainability of the park.
Shaw Ridge Park demonstrates the value of collaboration between client, designer, installer and specialist surfacing supplier. By combining innovative play equipment with premium safety surfacing and thoughtful landscape design, the project has created a destination that will benefit local families for many years to come.
As communities continue to invest in modern outdoor spaces that promote healthier lifestyles and inclusive play, Shaw Ridge Park stands as an excellent example of how carefully considered design and quality materials can transform a public park into a vibrant hub for recreation, wellbeing and community life.
